ALKRINGTON Dynamos achieved a home double in the Lancashire and Cheshire League last Saturday.
The first team beat Aldermere 2-0, and the second team romped to a 4-1 win over Old Trafford.
If league tables are anything to go by Dynamos’ first team looked favourites to take the points.
But there were some doubts in the camp, as in the last two seasons Aldermere had become something of a bogey for the local team.
There were times when Aldermere made nonsense of their lowly position, but Dynamos nerves were eased after 10 minutes when they were awarded a somewhat dubious penalty which captain Adam Foster despatched.
Aldermere responded well, and Dynamos rode their luck several times.
Goalkeeper Dave Jones had to be alert, and he made a fine reflex save to keep out what had looked a certain equaliser.
A post then came to Dynamos’ rescue before the break.
Dynamos settled into a better rhythm in the second half, but they had to wait 25 minutes before getting the comfort of a two-goal lead.
Darren Hoolickin, who had been guilty of squandering a couple of chances, received the ball deep in the Aldermere area.
With his back to goal he turned quickly and volleyed into the net.
This second goal proved to be enough, and Dynamos eased their way to the final whistle.
Dynamos’ second team looked in for its toughest test of the season to date, against the B Division leaders.
But they received a massive boost after 10 minutes when Shaun Sherwood scored with the Trafford defence left flat-footed.
That was the only goal of the first half.
The second half was more eventful.
Dynamos once again started the better, and there were signs that they were finally back to their best and firing on all cylinders.
A renewed urgency could be seen within the team as they continued to ask questions of the Old Trafford defence.
Fifteen minutes had passed when the Old Trafford keeper made a complete hash of clearing the ball and Scott Kershaw calmly slotted it home from all of 40-yard.
Trafford pulled a goal back with a fine volleyed effort from the edge of the box, but this proved to be only a minor hiccup for Dynamos who responded almost immediately.
Sherwood added his second with a fine finish, the ball flying into the net via a post.
Trafford heads went down, and with only minutes remaining Dynamos’ fourth came from Craig Corneille.
Dynamos’ under 12s slipped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Park Bridge Celtic in the Oldham and Rochdale Youth League.
Alkrington were under strength due to a long injury list, but they took the game to Bridge and opened the scoring through Callum Scott.
Bridge were soon back on terms, and they slowly began to gain the upper hand before adding a second goal.
Dynamos fought on gamely, but two late goals sealed their fate and meant an early exit from the cup.
