Goat attack was 'worst case of animal cruelty'

Sanctuary owners John Starkey and Deborah Bailey, with son Aaron, who discovered the mutilated pet

A family who had their pet goat mutilated by sick attackers have demanded those responsible hand themselves over.

Deborah Bailey and John Starkey have called on the ‘psychotic’ attackers who maimed their 19-year-old pygmy goat Sidney to come forward.

Sidney, a beloved family pet for over a decade, had his horns torn from his head and his legs broken in a brutal attack at the Tennyson Road Farm Horse and Pony Sanctuary in Boarshaw.

Co-owner Deborah said: "The people who have done this psychotic attack need catching and bringing to justice."

Sidney had to be put down after he was attacked while he slept in a shed at the sanctuary.

Deborah, who is pregnant, said: "Sidney used to come over and rest his head on my stomach. We had him over ten years and he was like one of the family.

"He had such a lovely temperament and used to love custard creams.

"The children have been devastated by it. We cannot understand why anyone would do this."

Sidney was found lying in a pool of blood at the sanctuary by the couple's son Aaron. As well as removing the animal's horns, attackers had broken one of his legs and dislocated another.

RSPCA inspector Caroline Hall said: "This is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I have ever seen. It was dreadful - Sidney had two huge caverns in his head where his horns had been ripped out and he was dripping in blood."

The animal's horns have since been recovered on the farm.

Since the attack, hundreds of outraged people have joined an online group to help bring those responsible to justice.

Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 1234 999 and leave a message for RSPCA inspector Caroline Hall.

This particular article made my blood run cold, the sort of cruel evil people that did this enjoy seeing suffering. They are just as capable of torturing a child as an animal and need bring to justice quickly, only hope the Police make it a high priority.

I agree entirely with you, but I would'nt hold your breath waiting for any resemblance of justice to be seen to be done even if they catch the person/s responsible.

I recall that when two horses were killed in an arson attack, about five years ago, the owner was quoted as saying that the police made it clear they were more worried about the effect on the parents of the teenager who, with others never found, was responsible. the teenager received some sort of supervision order.

But one lives in hope, maybe this time they will see the obvious point you make, a person with such a twisted mind as this is more than capable of harming any vulnerable human, and it will be taken seriously for a change.
