A SCHOOL has suffered significant damage after a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters were called to St Mary's RC Primary on Wood Street at around 2.30am this morning (Monday) following reports the first floor and roof of the school were on fire.

Three fire engines from Heywood and Blackley were mobilised with the hydraulic platform from Oldham and on their arrival they found a fire involving the first floor and roof, tackling it using jets whilst wearing breathing apparatus.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The fire was stated deliberately by unknown persons and caused around 25 per cent damage to the first floor and roof of the school."
