We asked the people of Middleton how they voted and why. Here is what they had had to say;

  • Eric Johnson, 73, retired, from Middleton
    I voted no as soon as I got my papers. I'm very happy with the result, but I didn't expect it. I make regular trips to see relatives in Ardwick, I'm an old age pensioner and it would have cost me three quid a day.
  • David Higginson, 59, retired, from Middleton
    It's certainly the right result. I just think it's too much for people to pay. It's a good day for motorists. They pay enough in petrol and running a car's a lot of money anyway without the congestion charge on top.
  • Mrs Carroll (wouldn't give first name), 56, reflexologist, from Wythenshawe
    I voted no. If it had gone through it would have built a big debt for future generations. The transport system should have been sorted out a long time ago, by the time we had the Commonwealth Games. I'm a public transport user. There's too much traffic on the roads. Families should only have one car.
  • Gaynor Ringland, 41, home care worker, from Middleton
    I think it's a good thing, I don't think people should be penalised just to get to work. In my job, I could be going in and out lots of times a day, and the bosses wouldn't be paying it.
  • Samantha Dunn, 18, shop assistant, from Middleton
    I think the result is a good thing. You shouldn't have to pay to get in and out of your own town. I don't drive myself, but people pay enough in petrol as it is. When I learn to drive, I don't want to be paying to go shopping.
  • Ray Donohue, 54, production team member, from Middleton
    I think the no vote's okay, but if the transport was reliable I'd have voted yes. There's too many bad points. I really like public transport, but I can't see it improving that much.
  • Michelle Hathaway, 29, housewife, from Middleton
    I'm pleased with the result. My husband's an electrician, he's always on the roads, it would have cost him a fortune. We already pay road tax, we pay enough. I don't feeli like we're missing out. I use public transport and I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
