Middleton Expats - try our map!

ARE you a former resident of Middleton who has moved abroad and who wants to get back in touch with people still living in the town? Do you know of friends or family who have moved overseas and you want to try and track them down? Well here's your chance with our new interactive map ...

In this section, we're giving an opportunity for people who were parted when locals decided to make new lives overseas to make contact once again.

If you are an ex-pat, who wants to know the whereabouts of a pal or relative, send us the details and we'll post them up here. The same is true of locals - let us know if you want to get back in touch with a local who has left these shores. You never know - they might just visit this site, read your message and you could be reunited.

Alternatively, ex-pats can write to us simply if they want to let the folks back home know what they've been up to, how life overseas is treating them, and what they miss about Middleton.

All you have to do to take advantage of this service is to click here to go to our interactive map of the world , then click on the part of the map where you live. Your own pinpoint will appear which you can move to the exact location you want (use the controls on the top-right of the map to move around and to zoom in and out, right down to street level).

A form will also appear which will allow you to give your name, contact details, reason for moving and anything else you want to share with us.

Please note - this information will appear live on the site immediately and is not moderated. If you feel that somebody is abusing this map service, please click here to e-mail the web editor.

NOTE: All entries received so far, which can bee seen by clicking on 'View comments' have been added to the interactive map - from now on we'd like all new entries to be added via this map and not by clicking on 'Submit comments'. Thank you.

Somebody has to be first so here we go. I am not from Middleton but Blackley, however your paper covers Blackley I believe. Left 30 years ago, no regrets, but fond memories of many nights in the Red Lion. E-mail: stevendean@shaw.ca

I was born in 1970 at Crumsall Hosptal and lived there until I was 10 on Broadway Chadderton. I was schooled at St Margaret Mary's and moved to Louisville KY. Our family currently lives in Middleton (Philbin/Shipp/Woods/Adams) and Atlanta Georgia, LA California, and Louisville Ky. I would love to see any respones from people in any of those areas or from you if you know me or those other family names I mentioned.

I spent most of my childhood living on langley estate & Middleton 1958 -1971 I went to Demesne junior & langley high. I have a class picture with Headmaster Pop Little & teacher Mr Nicolas If anybody would like a copy ! It was a tough place to grow up , but i think i got a pretty good education . There was lots of beautiful countryside all around . I was fortunate enough to have a job after school at Lee Bros grocery store on Lakeland court . I was raised in the foster care system & feel a great deal of appreciation & debt to that institution I fell in love for the first time in that area- we went on lovely walks together ! I still think of her & wonder hows she's doing
I Love You Middleton ! E-mail: qneeee@hotmail.com

I have lived in Brisbane since 1959, before that I lived most of my life on Victoria Ave. Blackley. Many a Saturday night have I spent at "The Grapes" pub in Middleton, supping a "John Willie Lee`s" or three.(Would it still be there)? My relatives still live in Alkrington and Blackley. We exchange Birhday and Christmas cards, as well as `phone calls. I doubt whether anybody else will remember me after all these years, but one never knows. Maybe I`ll get lucky eh. After all 80 isn`t that old. E-mail: tomlyons@hotkey.net.au

I moved to Canada almost 30 years ago with my Husband and two children. We are all happy there and have a good life, but I still enjoy reading the Middleton Guardain on my computer, What do I miss about Middleton, here goes. Cheese and Onion pies from the chippy, fresh cream cakes, good fresh baked bread. Conversations with ordinary people who you met on the bus. I used to enjoy a trip to Oldham market, but have heard its not so great anymore like many things these days. E-mail: jean.evans@cantire.com

I was born at the Crumpsal Hospital in 1949, living in Blakley, on Westborne Grove near Bernard Manning's club. We moved to Langley Estates on Mosley Road, when I was about 6 or 7.
I remember the farm pastures near by, and catching tadpoles in the fields near the school. I remember at school we were divided up into coulours representing Saxons, Danes, Normans, ... so on.
Our family moved to Canada in 1957.

Left Rhodes area of Middleton in 1972 & emigrated to Canada. First school was Rhodes Primary (Broad Street) followed by Moorclose Secondary. Used to work in Middleton Junction at Hunt Heat Exchangers until I emigrated. People I use to hang around with in Rhodes were: Donald Hilton, Teddy Heywood, John (Noddy) Omerod, Dave Prior, Colin Pendlebury, Susan Fallows, Brenda Nunn. wonder if any of these people are still around the area. Looking for relatives of the FOXALL and MILLER families of MIDDLETON. I gather MABEL MILLER was a midwife of the Foxall family. Believe her daughter RENEE was a school teacher and married WALTER, an Anglican minister, had a daughter believe named MARGARET. 1881 Census shows Thomas Foxall from Dublin born 1830 of 13 Thorpe St., beerseller Oddfellows Arms. Married Sarah Ann Snape, daughters Sophia & Edna. I am related to Sophia. I would love to make contact with family members. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What amazing posibilities on the internet! I put in a search for Middleton to have a browse down memory lane and found you - good ol' Middleton Guardian.
Wow - congratulations to the paper for continuing for so long in this cut-throat world and 'Thank You' too for starting this Middleton Exiles page.
I left Middleton December 1975 after growing up on Langley Estate and attending Langley Secondary Modern. After working at Middleton Public Library and working on GCE's at night school at Durnford Street I attended Teacher Training College
(Mather College Manchester). I then taught in various places around Lancashire before deciding to try out teaching overseas. Well - I've been overseas ever since!
Last time I had a couple of days in Middleton I was on my way up to visit York about 8 years ago. I had to navigate my way from the airport - I didn't know where I was. The whole of north Manchester seemed to have been demolished Moston, Blackley - then a great big hole for a motorway. I was devastated. The only thing remaining to guide my journey were the classic Accrington brick pubs lining the Oldham Road and Rochdale Road. Thank goodness for my misspent student days!
I'm driving through Middleton on 30th October this year. It will be interesting to spot the changes.
Before I finish - I'd like to say hello to any readers who remember Ingrid and Christa Harrison of Mosedale Road, Langley. It would be great to hear from you via this column.
AND - Hiya! to Mike, Lynn, Carol, Carol, Sandra, Joanne, Abby, Frances, Herta, Herta and Mrs. Parnell. Best wishes from Ingrid

HI all
I lived on Mosdale Rd from about 1956 to 1966. We lived at number 49 next to the Spooners at 47. Last night I was having a chat with my Mum who still lives in the UK (Failsworth). She told me that the house we lived in and 51 & 53, had been demolished. That came as a shock! Can anybody tell me why?

Hi Middletonions,
Just discovered the Middleton Guardian, I am delighted to read about fellow ex-pats.
I moved here with my husband and children in 1969. I went to Durnford St. school, left in the early 50's.
My sister Sheila and I used to go dancing in Blackley and Harperhey, I remember seeing Johnney Dankworth, Ted Heath and lots of lesser known bands in and arround Manchester about that time. That was a great time to be a teen ager.
Would love to hear from any old school friends / classmates ect.

hello, I am an ex that is now repatriated. It has been quite a change as I left for Victoria Canada at 14 and returned here 3 yrs ago with a 15 yr old daughter. There are many familiar things and also some changes. I went to Langley Primary School in the 60's and 70's then what was Hollin High School, then Queen Elizabeths Grammar school in Alkrington. Most of my school mates have moved away now and I did only keep in touch with two of them. If anyone remembers me and would like to drop a line that would be awesome.

Lived in Middleton (Morton St, Durnford St, and Hollin Lane) until 1971. Attended St Leonard's Parish School, then QEGS, then Salford U.
Have lived in the States for over 30 years, but travel frequently to Middleton to visit my brother Andrew and his family. Would be delighted to hear from people who were at school with me. I believe I've missed a couple of reunions already!

Mike, Sue, Steve and Paul Ingham emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1988. Middleton will always be home. We wish to send loads of love to both the Ingham and Ward families and our many friends. Thommys chippy is what we miss!! Great to see the 'colts' doing so well, they have come a long way since our first Middleton colts side many years ago. We would love to hear from any friends who we may have lost touch with over the years!!
