Corporation Street, on the right, dominates this photograph. Today the Arena now stands where the black car is parked, which is opposite Fountain Street. The once popular Co-op Hall can be seen on the left with its distinctive clock. Recently a dance invitation at the hall has been unearthed. It states that Mr and Mrs Kershaw were holding a dance on 11 November 1911. Dancing was from 6.45pm till 11.45pm. Programmes were 1/3d. Inside the thick card there were initials where the owner had pencilled in the person who partnered them at the various dances, which included, Barn Dance, Esperano, Lancers and the Twilight Waltz
With parts of the town centre about to change, we have decided this week to publish views of how the area looked from the gas holder.
These photographs were originally taken by Guardian photographer, Jamie Lowe.
The images published this week were copied from a collection of images held at the town’s Local Studies Library, in Long Street.
