Amanda discovered she was pregnant during the early stages of filming Wild At Heart ( ITV1, Sunday, 8pm), but couldn't tell anyone for the first three months.
"It was hard. I was completely knackered but had to keep it all a secret. Once I could tell people, everyone was so sweet and considerate. As the baby started getting bigger, the weather got hotter and it did get harder. But I was followed everywhere by a man with an umbrella and a footstool. I wouldn't get that sort of treatment at home."
The new six-part Sunday night series slots into the cosy TV spot previously occupied by Heartbeat and follows the journey of a family who leave England behind for a new life in Africa.
Vet
Lancashire-raised Stephen Tompkinson plays vet Danny, a widower who has jsut married divorcee Sarah, played by Amanda. He is the father of troublesome teenager Rosie - former Corrie actress Lucy-Jo Hudson - while Sarah has two young children, Evan and Olivia.
Amanda wasn't impressed when the script called for her character to be compared to the matriarch in an elephant herd. "It wasn't the most flattering comparison I've ever encountered, especially when I felt the size of an elephant with my pregnancy bump," she laughs.
"I didn't make a fuss during filming and did pretty much everything that was required of me. I did the stunt driving, mountain climbing and whatever else I was scripted to do that wouldn't endanger the baby, because I wanted to be professional.
"Of course, once she knew, Annie, the producer, had to make some allowances because of the wild animals. But on the whole I just got on with it. After all, there are plenty of women in Third World countries who give birth and get straight back to work."
Amanda first heard about the role through her agent. "The first thing she asked me was - are you scared of lions? I reminded her that I'm a patron of the Born Free Foundation and have worked in close proximity to many big cats.
"That was one of the reasons I wanted to take the part - it sounded like my dream job. I really enjoy working with wild animals, and to work with creatures so well cared for in such a beautiful environment was wonderful."
Reserve
Sarah and Danny move with their children to start up a game reserve. "Sarah gets stuck in and really believes in what they are trying to achieve. She doesn't care that they are just a family from Bristol with no experience of the African bush. She just goes for it. I'm just like her in that respect. Nothing would faze me, so I've really enjoyed playing her."
Stephen wanted the job as soon as he read the script. "My dad says that from as young as he can remember, I never had any fear of animals. I've always gravitated towards them and had the same response back," he explains.
"Before we started filming I had no real idea of how much interaction we would have with the wild animals, but it takes your breath away and you feel an enormous privilege to be tolerated even for a split second by them.
"Some of the footage we've got with the animals, especially with the elephants, is just magical. It was a magnificent experience and much more than I'd hoped for. I don't think there has been a family drama like this on our screens for years and years. It has been like starring in our own documentary, a once in a lifetime thing."
Johannesburg
For the first few weeks of filming, Stephen was commuting to the reserve from Johannesburg. "It was quite tough as the traffic is terrible and when you get up at 5.20am it was dark and freezing cold. But then the sun would start to come up and you would become aware of these vast landscapes. The whole place seemed to have a vibrancy and a life of its own."
Like other cast members, Leeds-born Lucy-Jo, who played Corrie's Killer Katy, hopes TV bosses will agree to a return trip. "My biggest wish is that we film another series so I can get my family to come out and meet all the amazing animals I've worked with."
But she did miss partner Alan Halsall - Weatherfield mechanic Tyrone Dobbs - while out on location for three months.
"My phone bills were huge because he was working so much that he only came over for a week. Instead we would talk every night.
"He bought me a computer and a webcam, and we emailed each other for an hour every night instead." Tweet

Having watched the first two episodes I am hooked! Good story line, which is developing and capturing its audience well.
It must be a very priveledged position to view nature at its best, when it is all to soon being destroyed and disrespected by humans.
Could anyone tell me where in South Africa is this programme filmed?
As a South African travel consultant who has been to many game lodges in southern Africa, I am disappointed at the perception of such lodges portrayed in the film - elephants and giraffe are not pets, but wild animals. 'Wild at Heart' makes a game drive in Limpopo Province (indicated by Du Plessis' number-plate) look like a British safari park!
10/10 fantastic im loving watching it.Great story line! It makes you wonder `why not pack up n lets go`. Id truley love to something like that
i would like to know where in africa is wild at heart filmed
Please advise where this was filmed in th Eastern Transvaal but where exactly??? Great drama love it .. makes me feel homesick
We love the music in wild at heart any plans for a cd.
Also why do we have talking about the next programe before the music has finnised at the end it is most annoying.
I lived on a farm in Port Elizabeth, South Afica for 6 years of my life. Now i'm back in england and hating it, i get bullied at school and hate living in this country that is just so different from Africa. I love watching the show and look forward to it every week. For one hour every week i get the chance to return to africa. By the end of each episode i am always close to tears. It brings back so many amazing memories. Just one idea for the show, perhaps show it more than once a week?
The whole programme is done so well - action, music etc. - that there simply must be another series.
This is by far one of the best programs on tv at the moment. Unfortunally i missed sundays episode and have lost track of whats happening. Is there likley to be a video or dvd of the series, or is there any one out there that has been taping it, if so i would love to hear from them.
This is an absolutely brilliant series, fantastic storylines, scenery, action, everything you need for a good family entertainment series - I do hope they do another series - it is great!!
I am actually from South Africa and I'm over here studying at the moment. I have spent most of my life in the bush and this program makes me so home-sick! It is beautifully done and all the characters, both British and South African are so wonderful.Everyone was cast so well! I look forward to my little slice of home every Sunday night. A great bit of television for all ages. Well done!
I love this series, but I'm so annoyed I missed the first few episodes, as it clashed with "Child Of Our Time".
I would love to buy it on DVD, does anyone know if it is going to be released on DVD? or also if it will be repeated on ITV2, 3 or 4.
congratulations amanda and i think you are absolutly stunning. i always have.your out of this world princess. lots of love bob
since i have been watching this tv programe i keep thinking to my self that i wish i was there with the animals becouse i love that sort of wild life it shoud be on every day or programes like it i am a big fan of wild life i wish i coud get out there & help with the animals witch i love so much its like the real thing of liveing out there . i dont want the programe to end i think it shoud be on permanant not just a one of thank you yours ashley fisher
I think the programme tries to give a too cosy view of encountering wild animals. I lived in South Africa 1995&96 frequently visiting the Pilansberg reserve where they had as little intimate contact with the animals. Out of interest, can you tell me where the series was filmed.
Thanks, Cora Baker
i think the new series Wild at Heart is great. i love it and look forward to watching it every week. i love Evan because i love the way he always wants to help with the animals all the time.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and truly hope there will be more to follow. The story lines are great and "real" and like many others, it makes me homesick too. It's also wonderful to see the a non-political programme.
A gretafamily programme. Where can I get a CD of similar music?
I really love Wild At Heart and was crestfallen when I heard tonight's episode was the last in the series! Will their be another one..or two...or three? Hee hee! *Smiles*
I love the show, but please tell me about the music. I want it, who is singing.
