Disaster will strike the cobbles of Coronation Street as the soap celebrates its 50th anniversary - with many of its famous residents killed and injured in a sensational accident.
The viaduct at the end of the street, close to the Kabin and Corner Shop, will collapse sending a tram careering off the bridge and onto the cobbles.
Metrolink bosses at GMPTE in Manchester have been working with the soap in the story line.
Exact details of the special week of episodes to be screened during the build up to the anniversary on December 9th are being kept under wraps.
Alternative scripts will be issued and security will be at its highest as producers keep the identity of those who will lose their lives top secret.
Even cast and crew do not know which Weatherfield residents will be killed in the disaster – which will be the biggest stunt Coronation Street has ever staged.
Announcing details of the dramatic storyline today, Corrie producer Phil Collinson said: "“As we celebrate the show reaching such an incredible milestone it feels fitting that we will be screening a dramatic event of this magnitude which will affect the lives of all the residents of Coronation Street.
"We’ll be using all the wonders of modern television production to bring you a disaster that will rock the lives of everyone in Weatherfield.
"At the heart of the drama though will be ordinary people on an ordinary street battling adversity – the template for the programme created by Tony Warren 50 years ago.”
Special effects experts from The Mill who worked on Gladiator and Doctor Who have been brought in by producer Phil Collinson to ensure the crash is as sensational as possible.

Hopefully it's the scriptwriters who buy it!
Can't understand why Metrolink have been working with the soap on the story line. They get enough bad publicity in real life.
They always say "sensational" but the stunts are always crap.
Look at American TV to see how its done properly.
As for Coronation St.......zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Not again! It's only 5 minutes since the train fell through the mission roof - narrowly missing Ena and Co.
Metrolink need to sort out their priorities as they need to focus on providing a good service for Manchester residents before leaping to the aid of a fictional tv script.
Will the money Metrolink receive for this job be re-invested in our under performing light rail system?
Producers want to very careful about what they plan to do, look what happened to The Bill!, also this storyline was talked about a few years ago when Claire Peacock was supposed to get a job on the trams!!
It's been ages since I watched Corrie.
It's such patronising northern tripe that has damaged Manchester's image for decades.
Time to pull the plug.
Mind you it was upsetting when Ernie Bishop got shot....
Is there not enough disasters around the world without creating a mock one. They will do anything to get viewing figures up.
Lets hope it does not happen in real life just before Christmas, Producers will have to suspend the show like the Cumbria killings episodes.
Great! I hope it gets rid of most of the cast, as they're mostly rubish! On the other hand, why do all the soaps have rediculas story lines, Coronation Street potrays Manchester people as being thick mancs, always in the pub. Emmerdale portrays yorkshire folk as being mostly village idiots, and again always in the pub. And Eastenders, "What a depressing soap" Makes East End Londeners as being nothing but loud mouthed thugs, again always in the pub. People who watch these programs whom come from more prosperous backgrounds must laugh at us commeners, for liking such rubbish.
The tram hits a mobility scooter on the track and it sends the tram crashing over onto the cobbles below, destroying the entire street.
"Even cast and crew do not know which Weatherfield residents will be killed in the disaster"
haha gonna be a good day for those turning up to work finding out they have just been fired
Steve
Haha quality, I heard it was done on purpose by the 'scooters on trams' mobility aliance
If you don't like it don't watch it.
Shame they are not using the opportunity to kill of the entire cast, demolish the street and get the piffle off our air waves.
i hope it's not one of those brand new M5000's that have just been bought. total waste of money buying it, if it is
why is it that comments on any story on this website are nearly always negative!!!
I believe in free speech as much as the next guy but that also means you can feel free to say positive things aswell!!!!
What's the point in whinging about something you don't even like!!!!!!!!
Coronation Street; a true reflection of life in urban Manchester.
Stupid and silly storyline. Corrie doesn't need stories like this, it needs more Northern humour and romance. Leave the morbid violent storylines to that Southern shandy drinking soap.
That's not going to encourage the Government to invest in the Metrolink.
Have the scriptwriters been in the vaults..? Wasn't there a similar storyline in 1967 when Ena Sharples was trapped under the viaduct...Just re-name the show Regurgitation Street, and we'll guess the storyline.
This street must have the highest death rate in the country.
Loads of people will die and 3 episodes later it'll be like it never happened.
Don't panic everyone, this is the Metrolink remember. It probablly won't turn up.
Metrolink destroying Corrie tho, the thing has been operating for 18 years or so and finally provides some customer satisfaction!
Unfortunately, due to a typo this story has been hyped out of proportion.
It is in fact a pram that will fall of the viaduct.
Get rid of Becky McDonald she's a right cow
