Ian Brown is throwing a party in the park.... and 15,000 people are invited.
The former Stone Roses frontman is to top the bill at a homecoming gig at Platt Fields Park later this year.
Organisers say the open-air concert will rival the three-night run of summer gigs by Burnage rockers Oasis at Heaton Park.
Brown, famous for his legendary swagger, last played his home city at the M.E.N Arena in December as part of a sold-out tour.
He will treat adoring fans to hits from his 14 year solo career as well as tracks from new album My Way – described by the singer as his answer to Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Supporting him will be Oldham band The Whip and Bad Lieutenant, Bernard Sumner's new band, along with cult Factory Record band A Certain Ratio
Sumner's former New Order bandmate Peter Hook will perform a DJ set – as will ex-Hacienda DJ Mike Pickering and dance duo Unkle.
The gig – on June 11 – is being organised by the Warehouse Project nightclub to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the council-owned park.
Centenary
Promoters say a second concert featuring another major artist will take place the following day, as part of a weekend of centenary celebrations at the park.
Since splitting with the Stone Roses in 1996, Brown has produced six albums as well finding time to have a cameo role in a Harry Potter.
Brown, 47, who grew up in Timperley and attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, said the outdoor gig would be a trip down memory lane.
He said: “I'm mad excited to be playing at Platt Fields. As a kid my dad used to take me to Manchester Carnival there.”
Although the gig has only just been officially announced, internet touts are already offering tickets for sale at as much as four times their face value of £28.50.
Official tickets will go on sale at 9am tomorrow. For information about suppliers visit www.thewarehouseproject.com/ianbrown

I think because he is a bigger star with more talent in his finger than the whole of Oasis - and because Liam has been trying to be Ian (Brown) the way Noel has been trying to be Paul (Weller) for a decade now. So, to answer your question - it is about quality, not quantity. And if you really think there will only be 15.000 people in the park when Ian Brown plays you are nuts. Hey, I wonder if Angela Epstein will be writing a piece about it they way she did the completely mis-judged bit about Oasis ha ha. I am sorry MEN, the other sheep may have forgotten that she is offensive and talentless, but I am going to keep bringing it up until she is demoted to admin clerk.
