PETER Kay is coming home - to the M.E.N. Arena.
The Bolton funnyman announced today that he is going back to stand-up seven years since he last delighted a Manchester audience.
He took the Arena by storm on the last night of his nationwide My Mum wants a Bungalowtour in 2003 arriving on stage in the yellow jacket he used to wear when he worked there as a steward.
But this time Peter is staying put at the Arena and the world will come to him.
Tickets for the The Tour That Doesn't Tour Tour on April 27, 28, 29 and 30 2010 will go on sale tomorrow and if there is the expected massive demand for tickets, the shows may run into May.
Kay told the M.E.N: "Playing the Arena is big deal to me, it feels like home, in fact I can almost see my house from the roof. I've a lot of history with the Arena, having worked there as a steward when it first opened in 1995 with Torvill & Dean to eventually performing the last night of my Mum Wants A Bungalow Tour there in 2003.
"It seemed the perfect place to return to stand-up. I also think of Manchester as home, the people have always been so supportive over the years so it made great sense to play there again.
"It's taken me a while to want to perform stand-up again, the main catalyst was writing my second book, Saturday Night Peter, which was all about my days working on the club circuit performing stand-up around Manchester and across Britain.
"Recalling all those thoughts and nerves brought back a desire to go back. I think I'd regret not doing stand-up again, it is terrifying there's no getting around that but when it goes well there's nothing like it in the world."
The 'Tour that doesn't Tour Tour' is the brainchild of Peter Kayand John Knight, General Manager of the M.E.N. Arena
Mr Knight said: "This is a groundbreaking deal in the industry. I first suggested to Peter over a year ago that when he was ready to perform live again he should simply take over this Arena for a run instead of trekking round the country every night. It means that SMG, the operators of the Arena, are promoting the shows directly with Peter. We are working closely together on all aspects of the event - plus he gets to sleep in his own bed every night!"
It is hoped that Peter Kay's famous characters including Brian Potter from Phoenix Nights, reality star Geraldine and Max from the Max and Paddy duo will join him on stage but the exact format of the show remains a closely guarded secret.
Mr Knight added: "Peter is keeping his cards close to his chest but he is working on a completely new show that will surprise everyone."
The run of shows is expected to be a massive boost for the Manchester economy with a high demand for hotel rooms for fans who will travel from all over the country to see their comedy hero.
Tickets go on sale at 11am tomorrow. Call the Arena on 0844 847 8000 or log on to www.men-arena.com .

As the article mentions, this should prove a good boost to the local economy as well

Kay was funny, a novelty, when his Blackpool Tower video came out, but has barely created any new material of note since. I am, however, curious as to what comes next: garlic bread, cheesecake and then...?

He was on Good Morning this morning, and the reason being is that he has a young family that he doesn't wish to be away from. So he is doing multiple nights here so that distant fans can have a chance to come and see him. Being self employed - it's great!!
From what he was saying on the TV, he has plenty of new material coming what with so much having happened since his last round..
I'm looking forward to it :)

And then I hope he tells us again on DVD.

Lots of performers have families - it's seven years since he last left his family to tour - I bet they're sick of hearing "Garlic Bread!" by now.

So for all the people posting negative comments, lets see you get up there and do what peter does - As for the Manchester Economy, having always lived and worked in Manchester why would anyone in their right mind knock something that will actually help lots of people; from the hotel cleaners to the restaurant managers, taxi drivers to market stall holders all and more WILL benifit from all the visiting tourists on their way to see the best thing out of the North this century.
Rock on Peter we love you and will be there in April.

Problem solved.
There are many many more money spinners than Peter Kay.
And most, if not all, make more than him and demand more fame for it.
The guy likes doing stand-up, people buy tickets to see him. Leave him be!!!
(And have some garlic bread, put the big light on and stop in - just in case it starts spitting!) :)

Having had a look at how the "Tour" is being staged, all in one arena, with 4 dates to start and as I write, more are added as the M.E.N books each date up (it's only the pre-sale!)- it has a distinct look and feel of the Wacko Jacko concerts when they were released.
So, was it really writing the book that gave Peter the idea, or was it seeing how Wacko Jacko was to make millions from doing a "residential" set of gigs?
Same price tickets + No tour costs = Lots of money for brand "Peter Kay"
Read his unofficial books, the man is a greedy, money orientated, attention seeking, unfunny, one brand has been.
Wonder how he'll re-package this routine for 2010/2011/2012/2013/2014/2015

Honestly, I am the biggest Phoenix Nights fan around, rating it alongside Fawlty Towers and The Young Ones (in my opinion), but his stand up is tedious and predictable, and that Geraldine Pop Star effort was so bad I was embarassed and had to turn th TV over.
Redeem yourself Peter and go back to your roots.
