But today she is picking up the pieces after slurring her way through a live interview on yesterday's This Morning show with Fern Britton and Phillip Schofield, an infamous appearance that is already an internet hit. The spectacle was so shocking that even her own publicist, Max Clifford, said he would have stopped her from going on air.
"I just wish I had been there," he tells The Diary. "I would never have let her go on."
Described as "car crash TV" the interview sparked calls from worried viewers after Wilmslow-based Katona, who has four children, slurred her way through a series of questions. She even called out for husband Mark Croft after Phil asked her: "You don't seem right to me, you've got the body sorted but your speech is a bit slurred, how are you feeling?"
Putting it down to prescription drugs, she said: "That's because I'm on medication at night-time. I had some last night, didn't I Mark?"
When Fern broached the question of alcohol, Katona - who has previously battled drug addiction - replied: "I thought you were trying to imply I was an alcoholic there."
Speaking to The Diary shortly after the interview aired, Clifford said he had been inundated with calls about her - including from companies who pay her serious amounts of money to represent them.
"I've become very concerned about her over the past few months," he says. "I've had people like Iceland and MTV on the phone and they are all worried. Iceland are worried because she is supposed to be this happy capable young mum and the interview today doesn't give that perception."
With Kerry due in Manchester on November 1 to launch her new perfume, Clifford said there were no plans as yet to cancel her work appointments. However, he added he would be sitting down with the former singer and her husband as soon as possible to discuss her health.
"I think the world of Kerry," he says. "She and Mark maintain it's purely the medication. Of course, the problem is people just don't believe that.
"I need to sit down with her and Mark as soon as possible. The irony is the MTV show she was promoting is called Whole Again. She has got to look after her health and everything else should come second."
