COMEDY superstar Matt Lucas, pictured, was a surprise face in the audience at Noel Coward comedy Hay Fever at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

The light-hearted play about an eccentric theatrical family helped put a smile on Matt's face after his recent heartbreak - splitting with his partner of six years Kevin McGee.

The Little Britain star was among the crowds chortling away at the play last week.

I hear the distinctive star made a special trip to see the new production in Manchester because his mate, actor Chris New, stars as Simon in the show.

And the play, also starring Ben Keaton and Belinda Lang, has been a big hit with theatre-goers from across the region - so much so that an extra week of performances has been added up to August 16.

I hear among the celebs also booking tickets is Lord Of The Rings star Sir Ian McKellen.
