Currently filming in and around the city, Massive co-stars The Royle Family's Ralf Little and is due to be screened on BBC3 later this year.
The six-part series features Danny, played by Bury-born Ralf, and Shay (Carl Rice), who call time on their council jobs to follow their music dream.
St Helens-raised Johnny plays Shay's father in the series about the rise of Manchester's Shady Records.
Massive is written by Damian Lanigan, who back in 1984 played The Hacienda with his band The Twentieth Legion.
The series is being made by BBC Comedy North.
Unique
Creative head of comedy Kenton Allen promised 'a unique comedy treat'.
He added: "Massive combines Ralf Little and Johnny Vegas with a terrific supporting cast and Damian Lanigan's vivid scripts about rock 'n roll lifestyles on a Primark budget."
A BBC spokesman added: "They pluck a girl band from the obscurity of Superbuns Cake Shop, get sued by Eminem, get lost in the Pennines - where they find the new Oasis - and get involved in a scam."
The cast also includes Paul Kaye, Philip Jackson, Christine Bottomley and Steve Furst.
Vegas has recently appeared in the second series of hit comedy show Benidorm as Lancashire pub quiz champion 'The Oracle' which ended last week.
He is currently starring as drug dealer Moz in BBC comedy Ideal.
