COMEDY stars Peter Kay and Paddy McGuinness kept on smiling despite losing out on a massive £50,000 for charity on TV gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
The Max and Paddy stars were playing in a special celebrity version of the hit show on Saturday night, to raise a potential £1mn for their chosen charities - but ended up leaving with £1,000.
The duo had raced correctly through 6 of the possible 12 questions, winning a potential £20,000 on the gameshow.
But they decided to play on with the £50,000 question - guessing the answer to the question: By what name is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major popularly known?
They used their one remaining “lifeline” of 50:50, which gave them just two answers to choose from – C: Moonlight or D: Pastoral.
On the spur of the moment they decided to play on with the answer of Moonlight – even though giving an incorrect answer would send the pair straight back down to their “guaranteed” winnings of £1,000.
Grimace
Show host Chris Tarrant grimaced as he revealed to the Bolton stars that they had given the wrong answer - losing £19,000 in the process.
Peter philosophically sighed: "That's life isn't it? You take your chances don't you?"
But kind-hearted Peter agreed to make up the £19,000 they'd lost with his own money to their two chosen charities - the Derian House Children's Hospice in Chorley and the British Heart Foundation.
It had been going so well for the TV stars who answered correctly questions on subjects as diverse as children’s cartoons, football, film and geography.
But it was the musical question that left the pair on a distinctly sour note at the end of the night.
At the start of the show, Peter had admitted he didn't fancy their chances in the quiz.
He said: "I personally don't do what I do for a living because I'm bright".
Derian House Hospice manager Trevor Briggs remained full of praise for the pair. He said: “While the money raised is very important for us, it’s the profile that this show has given us which is so important. When people like Peter and Paddy do things the public take notice, so we’re in no doubt the charity will benefit in so many ways from their support on this show and we can’t thank them enough.”
