He suffered lacerations after his hand was caught in a wheel in the fall at Grudziadz but was told he should be fit to resume racing in 10 days.
However, Hougaard went to hospital in Denmark on Wednesday after a painful trip home, followed by difficulty in sleeping because of the discomfort.
He was kept in hospital for further checks and has been told he may need surgery.
