Wolverhampton 48 Belle Vue 44

JASON Crump was the driving force behind a battling Belle Vue show with 16 points in Monday night's Craven Shield match at Wolverhampton.

But new whizkid Steve Boxall showed his rich potential again with nine points, including a heat win, from six rides.

Polish signing Lukasz Jankowski landed his first heat for the Aces and the score would have been even closer but for skipper Joe Screen falling while in the lead.

Boss David Gordon said: "We proved we can be competitive away from home by going close after being eight points behind after six races."

The Aces provided the first two winners in Crump and Boxall but, each time, the points were shared and the home side went ahead at 10-8 after heatthree. It was 22-14 after the sixth when Screen fell while leading.

Charlie Gjedde won the seventh to cut the lead to six but Belle Vue hopes of closing the gap in heat 11 were limited when Crump came in for an extra ridebut was edge into second place by the fast-starting David Howe. That made it 38-30 with four races to go.

The Aces are still waiting for a decision from the Speedway Control Bureau over the result of their Good Friday win over Wolverhampton which ended in a 49-44 win.

They have protested that the visitors broke the rules when they gave Danishreserve Nicolai Klindt an extra ride in heat 14 which he won and his points could be deducted.

The Aces open their Elite League campaign next Monday evening with a home match against Lakeside and boss David Gordon is keen to maintain the momentum of a flying start to the season at the Kirkmanshulme Lane greyhound stadium.

Problems

He said: "We needed a winning start to the season after the problems we had last year and everything went better than we could have expected.

"We had such a big crowd we had to delay the start because people were still queuing at the turnstiles when the first race was due to take place.

"It's like having an extra man when the riders can look up and see their fans packing the terraces. We have worked very hard during the winter to turn things round and now we must capitalise on this start.

"We struggled at home last season but are looking to be much more competitive this year, especially now Jason Crump is back with us."

WOLVERHAMPTON: F Lindgren 11+1 bonus, N K Iversen 10+1, D Howe 9+1, A Dryml7+1, K Hansen 6, C Hefenbrock 4, N Klindt 1+1.

BELLE VUE: J Crump 16, S Boxall 9+1, C Gjedde 9+1, J Screen 4, L Jankowski4, B Forsberg 1+1, M Rajkowski 1.

Well done to the lads on this win, and lets hope its the start of things to come at Kirky Lane! I was very impressed to see so many people there on friday as well, I believe the start was delayed due to the queues outside, which is great news to hear, lets hope others are learning about our great sport and keep coming back to fill the terraces!

An encouraging start. A good home win and running Wolves close down there. I'm delighted to see there was a bigger crowd last week.
I'd love Speedway to return to Friday nights, but it is now impractical. At one time there were loads of Saturday night tracks, but the Grand Prix has put paid to that and the same problem would occur on Fridays.
Anyways up, I'm feeling more positive for the season already.
