SKIPPER Joe Screen at least gave the travelling fans something to cheer at Belle Vue's jinxed track on Thursday night.

Screen was the only Ace to give the home stars a real run for their money in an Elite League match at Peterborough, where Belle Vue have won just once in 20 visits.

He won his double points-scoring tactical ride in heat seven, with team-mate Kaj Laukkanen second as both Panthers - including former Ace Kenneth Bjerre - suffered mechanical problems.

But their 8-1 win was Belle Vue's only heat advantage as they slumped to their biggest-ever defeat at the East of England Showground, surpassing their 60-30 thrashing in 1999. Screen finished second in two of his other outings, and was pipped on the line in another by Lukas Dryml.

Reserve Adam Skornicki was the only other Belle Vue rider to win a race in a bizarre heat four.

Sun

It was stopped first time around, as Ace Kevin Doolan fell while in second place after being blinded on one of the bends by the setting sun.

The meeting was held up for 20 minutes while the sun dipped before Skornicki won the re-run. Hans Andersen - who scored a maximum in Peterborough's 13-point win at Belle Vue on Monday - was again unbeaten for the league champions, along with fellow Dane Niels-Kristian Iversen.

Peterborough piled in eight 5-1 maximums, with Belle Vue's No1 Simon Stead unable to get to grips with the pacy circuit.

James Wright also struggled for the Aces and failed to beat an opponent.

The Aces, sponsored by Channel M, have another league match at Oxford tonight.
