BELLE Vue promoter John Perrin has thrown struggling Slovenian champion Matej Ferjan a one-match make-or-break chance to save his job.
He was ready to axe the below-power star when his dismal two-point return was the prime reason for the Aces' 46-44 home Elite League defeat by Coventry.
Ferjan has scored only 10 points from four meetings in a disappointing start to the campaign and Perrin's patience has reached breaking point already.
He was considering possible replacements after the Coventry match but has now agreed to let the 25-year-old Grand Prix man keep his place for the match against Ipswich at Kirkmanshulme Lane next Monday.
Ferjan's backroom team insist that they have sorted out some early-season problems and, on the strength of that, Perrin has agreed to delay a final decision.
He said: "His place is in serious jeopardy and he knows it. I've agreed to leave him in the side for the Ipswich match."
"If there is no improvement then we'll have to look at our options. We've got the nucleus of a very good team here and I'll get it sorted out. We'll be a force to be reckoned with this season.
"We've got a very strong top end to the side, our crowds have been good and the racing has been good.
"What we have to do now is get the team right so we can send the supporters home happy with some victories."
Perrin won't hestitate to make changes if necessary after feeling he gave some riders too much time to come good last season. The result was that the Aces finished bottom of the table for the second year in a row.
Now, after investing heavily to bring riders like Jason Crump, Sam Ermolenko and Brian Karger, he cannot afford to do the same again.
