Amaechi is left at loose end

ENGLAND'S most famous basketball player, John Amaechi, has left the Houston Rockets for the New York Knicks - but is expected to soon be released by the Eastern Conference club.

Recently-appointed Knicks president Isiah Thomas said that the club probably would let Amaechi go.

The Stockport-born player was only a part of the deal which also sent Moochie Norris, a 30-year-old veteran who can man both guard spots, to the Knicks and Thomas has made it clear the American was the key figure in the transaction.

Now Amaechi (pictured) could be left to find a new club or leave the States.

If he does depart, it won't affect Amaechi's reputation as the most celebrated player ever to emerge from Britain.

His most successful NBA season was 1999-2000 with the Orlando Magic, when he played more than 21 minutes a game and averaged almost 11 points.

The 6ft 10in power forward signed for the Cleveland Cavaliers (1995-96) after graduating from Penn State University.

He also played in Greece for Panathinaikos and had a stint with the Sheffield Sharks.

He made his name with Orlando and moved to New York after spells with Utah Jazz and the Rockets.
