AMATEUR Gareth Bradley caused the biggest upset in the Manchester Alliance Matchplay Championship preliminary round by despatching Ringway teaching pro David Brunton.

Bradley, a former Cheshire captain, cashed in on home advantage when he won on the final green at Bramhall.

But he faces a tough task in his bid to emulate his county team-mate James Murphy who won the title in 2002.

His next opponent is M.E.N. Manchester Open winner Jon Cheetham, the Mobberley pro who dominated the PGA North Region this season.

The pair were foursomes partners in the Cheshire side before Cheetham turned pro and Bradley relishes the challenge.

And he also has an old score to settle when they square up to each other on Friday.

"He beat me in the final a few years ago," he said.

Murphy, the reigning English Champion of Champions, from Shrigley Hall, has a home date with Castle Hawk amateur Martin Johnson.

Didsbury pro Barber, the defending champion who clocked up a record seventh win last season, hosts Sale's Peter Mackenzie.

And golfer of the year Richard Green, of Bramhall, takes on Flixton's Gary Coope.

Davyhulme Park's Mike Wallwork also struck a blow for the unpaid brigade by eclipsing Brookdale trainee pro David Thwaites at the first extra hole to earn the right to host Anthony Sproston.
