BOUYANT Belle Vue are living up to their Aces nickname again.

Promoter John Perrin put a glowing perspective on his new-look side's surge of winning form by saying: "We beat the best team in the league."

The return of former star Joe Screen on loan from Eastbourne in July has transformed a side which had been relying too much on their superstar Aussie Jason Crump.

Screen has intimated he would like to stay next season and would provide a powerful top end to the side with Crump, Jason Lyons and Steve Johnston.

Perrin said: "If we'd had this side at the start of the season I doubt if we'd have lost at home and would have been in the end-of-season play-offs.

"Coventry are the best team in the league but we would have beaten them more comfortably, and taken the aggregate bonus point, if Craig Watson had been available.

"Rusty Harrison came in and did well with three points but Watson would have scored eight or ten."

The meeting provided some quality racing for the Sky TV cameras, especially considering the rain which soaked the circuit two hours before the start.

Aces skipper Johnston said: "It wasn't the best out there because of the weather. The track was slimy at the start but they did the best they could with it in the circumstances.

"There was some good racing and we had a great win over a Coventry side who are at the top of the table."
Crump had to win a race against the clock even to take part in the meeting. His flight from Copenhagen was cancelled and he arrived just before the first race.

He was unbeaten by a visiting rider in his first four outings but missed his fifth home maximum in a row when third in his last race. Coventry's Lee Richardson fell in front of him and knocked Crump off line.

Watson will return tomorrow night when the Aces complete their home league programme against Wolverhampton (7.45).
