RL: Briers linked with union

TOP Welsh Rugby Union clubs have joined the chase for Warrington's GB star Lee Briers.

The Wolves scrumhalf could land himself a lucrative RU contract but he is unlikely to defect even though he may start the season in the unfamiliar role of fullback.

The expected move has raised a few eyebrows among fans, but Briars says he is happy to prove himself as a last line of defence.

However that is unlikely to stop the speculation and Widnes have also been linked with the player.

Return to roots?

They could approach Warrington to see if a loan deal interests the Wolves board.

Former Warrington coach Tony Barrow knows Briers well and is convinced he will return to his St Helens roots at the end of this season. Briers has one more year of a contract to serve.

It's understood Warrington bosses have already been told he plans to move after this.

He started his career at Saints and Tony Barrow believes this is where he will end up.

''Briers is a superb player, I've known him since he was a youngster coming through," Barrow said.

"I've a sneaking feeling that Saints will come in for him when he is out of contract.''

Saints boss Ian Millward is understood to have a high regard for Briers who faces competition from Sid Domic and Matt Rodwell for starting places at half back in what is a new look Warrington line-up.
