RL: Roughyeds boss keeps mind on job

IT'S a wonder how Mike Ford has been sleeping at night!

The coach of a club forced onto the streets, crushing setbacks have become a way of life for the young Oldham boss.

The latest body blow has been the local council ruling preventing the nomads of the Northern Ford Premiership playing Swinton tomorrow at Ashton United's Hurst Cross soccer ground.

Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton expects to have the matter in hand by this time next week.

Ford simply soldiers on, sporting a brave smile - but deep down his disappointment and frustration is plentiful.

On the eve of the new NFP season, Ford told M.E.N. Sport: ''I distance myself from all the politics and just concentrate on the coaching.

''I have my own ideas on the situation and how things have gone, but these remain private and won't change. My priority is my players.''

Ford's pre-season plans were thrown into disarray when Oldham couldn't afford to stay at Boundary Park.

Oldham's plight may seem comical to outsiders but, as a proud local lad, Ford has nothing to laugh about.

His heart bleeds for the fans who have remained incredibly supportive.

He said: ''My players have been superb in all of this. They deserve massive praise for how they have remained fully focused.

''The hardest thing has been telling them to remain mentally tough when they have left me and gone home after training.

''Many of them were in a similar situations when Bramley had problems. We just have to get on with things and see what tomorrow brings.

''I love my coaching and nothing will change from my point of view.''

  • Salford City Reds will retain Damien Driscoll and look to pair him in the pack with Brisbane's Mark Corvo.

Sonny Nickle has joined Barrow but is currently suspended.

Denis Betts is still considering a move to the coaching staff as revealed last month in M.E.N. Sport. Mike Gregory will coach the under-19s.

  • Warrington Wolves have announced Kit as their new kit and training range manufacturer. Wolves have also signed a four-year deal with Genesis.
