Golf: Title winner back on the tee

ANDREW Murray pegs up in the Brother Winter Series at Portal tomorrow (Tuesday) convinced he can reclaim the order of merit title he held a record four times in a row.

That run came to an abrupt end two years ago as he underwent a hip operation, but now fully fit he believes he can compete with the best again.

"There are five events left and I intend to play in them all. I'm going to make a big effort if only to prove I have not lost my competitive edge,'' he said.

  • Birchwood's Phil Archer is defending the Brother title he snatched at the death from David Shacklady.

But Ormskirk-based Shacklady has already drawn first blood, winning at Mere where Archer failed to pick up a solitary point.

The Portal line-up also includes De Vere Hotels PGA North Region champion Brian Sharrock, of Horwich - and Natalie Adams, a professional at Shrigley Hall.
