RL: Captains hold key to Ashes victory

ASHES glory may well hinge on a power battle between the rival skippers.

The final Test F-Factor features Kangaroo skipper Brad Fittler, playing his last game for Australia, against Lions leader Andrew Farrell.

Pack ace Fittler leads Australia for the 20th time and he plans a champagne finale after starring at Bolton last week and kick-starting Australia's victory with a trademark try.

Both players are world class loose forwards, yet neither man has ventured out of his native land to ply his trade.

Fittler, who became the youngest New South Wales Origin representative, at the age of 18 is on his third Kangaroo Tour.

Ahead of his 34th cap tonight he said: ''I am really looking forward to this match. Pretty much of my whole career has been built up and geared to this and I am looking at a big game.

''I know fairy tales do not happen and you have to work hard for them.''

Fittler admits young players in the Kangaroo party have missed out with Australia not playing club matches.

He added: ''It is a shame they have not played against club sides because these places typify the character of English rugby.''

Fittler has still not given up hope of one day playing in the UK.

He said: ''I'm as fit as I've ever been and the older you get the smarter you get with training and how you look after yourself.''

Wigan have been long-time admirers of Fittler, yet the emergence and status of Farrell - an influential figure both on and off the field - meant the Warriors have never needed to buy a quality loose forward.

Honours are even going into tonight's game and GB star Terry O'Connor believes the JJB Stadium may well inspire Farrell to reach for the stars.

Great Britain are bitterly opposed to the appointment of Australian Bill Harrigan as big match referee but Farrell has enough on his plate without worrying about the official.

He hopes the pack can respond to his prompting and will look to dominate as he does in Super League.

Farrell's Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay told M.E.N. Sport: ''Obviously, I want a British win but you never know what to expect from the Australians who can be so dangerous.''
