Lancashire are having to face the probability that Crawley will be with Hampshire next season.

Lancashire have still to agree to release him from his contract but Crawley's lawyer Gary Mellor said today (Thursday): ''We believe that Lancashire have treated John disgracefully and that he has enough evidence to walk away if necessary.

''His attitude has hardened and we can assure Lancashire that there is now no room for compromise.

''This is nothing to do with money. He could have hung on for a couple of years for his testimonial.

''But he is far more concerned with cricketing matters and, of course, he wants to regain his place in the England side.''

Crawley's anger with the club effectively nullifies the signing of Aussie ace Stuart Law.

Lancashire are almost certain to start 2002 lacking an opener, following Mike Atherton's retirement, and a natural number three.
