Wigan boss Paul Jewell slammed his side's lack of discipline following a humiliating FA Cup exit against Canvey Island.
The Latics were reduced to nine men against Rymans League side Island, with Tony Dinning dismissed just before half-time , then Lee Ashcroft was given his marching orders ten minutes before full-time.
However, despite the numerical advantage, Canvey's commitment belied their lowly status and helped them match Wigan, particularly in midfield.
Wigan started well -to be expected given their morale-boosting midweek 6-1 home victory against Stoke - but failed to take early chances.
Lee McCulloch was the main culprit when on 20 minutes, he ballooned the ball over the cross bar when it would have been easier to score.
The squandering of further chances, notably from Kennedy and Ashcroft, added to the frustration that was felt by Dinning's dismissal.
And Canvey were bolstered by Julian Dicks keeping Dalglish quiet, preventing him from assuming the play-maker role that had proved pivotal to the midweek demolition of Stoke.
When Ashcroft's was sent off on 80 minutes for a second bookable offence, Canvey sensed an upset was on the cards and came forward with more confidence.
And, two minutes from time, Neil Gregory connected sweetly on the volley to arrowe the ball into the top corner and Canvey into the second round. For Jewell, a major setback following his side's midweek victory, for Canvey, a repeat of last year's giantkilling heroics when they beat Port Vale away.
