NICK Dougherty drove himself to despair yesterday (Thursday) after a series of wayward tee shots sent him tumbling down the leaderboard in the second round of the European Tour School in Spain.
The 19-year-old former Walker Cup star, attached to Chorley club Shaw Hill, handed in a bogey-strewn four-over-par 76 at San Roque, then admitted: ''I was either great or terrible - just a few bad swings cost me plenty.''
Dougherty, who had opened with 69 at Sotogrande, started his round at the 10th and immediately dropped a shot.
Another slipped by at the 12th but he birdied the next two to reach the turn in level par.
Only three pars on the home stretch told its own story as he dropped six shots - which included two double-bogeys - but limited any further damage with a brace of birdies.
''It's been one of those days - hopefully the worst I'll have this week. Thankfully this is a six-round tournament so I'm not out of it,'' he added.
The leading 35 players will receive their full cards for next season's tour.
Dougherty, lying 63rd at one-over-par and eight shots of the pace, was back at Sotogrande today with the more immediate target of making tomorrow's cut.
