SCOTT Jackson has confirmed his credentials as one of the best young prospects in the county with his elevation to the England team to play an international match in Spain next week.

The Bramall Park player joins forces with Didsbury hot-shot Daniel Wardrop in the six-strong line-up to face the host country, Sweden and Germany.

Their selection is not only a testament to their undoubted talents but a tribute to their clubs and the Cheshire county structure which has nurtured them since they were juniors.

The two 18-year-olds have graduated from the England Boys ranks - Wardrop playing a major part in the Home International victory at Moortown, winning the Greek Amateur then last month losing in a play-off against Walker Cup star Barry Hulme in the Lexus European Under-21 championship at Turnberry.

And a week ago he upstaged a strong field of seasoned professionals to win a Tamsel Tour fixture at High Legh Park. Although Wardrop appears the more successful of the two, Jackson is closing the gap.

He only came into international reckoning this year when he was selected to play in the World Junior Championship in Japan - the tournament that helped to launch Nick Dougherty when he won it three years ago.

''That was the highlight of my year and although I did not do as well as Nick the experience was priceless,'' he said.

Wardrop is in the national squad which has sensibly dropped its elite tag and Jackson, along with Reddish Vale's Barry Barker, is in the A squad.

While Wardrop has set his sights on a place in the GB and Ireland side chasing a hat-trick of Walker Cup victories in 2003 at Ganton, Jackson is eager to turn professional.

''It would be great to play in the team,'' said Jackson, ''but everything I've been working for is linked to joining the paid ranks.

''Whatever comes in the amateur game will be a bonus. There is a possibility that I will already be a pro by the time Ganton comes along.''
