GOAL-ace Rod Thornley was again Altrincham's saviour as the Robins survived a scare to squeeze past Spalding in a tense FA Umbro Trophy replay at Moss Lane.

Thornley, who had given Alty an 11th minute lead, was again on hand to slide home a late winner after the visitors had twice fought back to level. Mark Sertori bagged the Robins' second with a 45th minute header.

Alty next visit the winners of Radcliffe's replay at Accrington tonight ( Wednesday ), while Trafford, too, march on, their 3-0 victory at Ossett Albion earning them a trip to Moor Green.

Nigel Evans' penalty miss sent Droylsden crashing to a shoot-out defeat at Frickley after a 1-1 draw. Rossendale tumbled to a 2-0 defeat at Bedworth.

Holders Stalybridge powered through to the UniBond Cheshire Senior Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 extra-time victory at Chester.

Kevin Parr headed their winner after Chester's Chris Malkin had wiped out Matthew McNeil's early opener with an 87th minute equaliser to send the tie into extra-time.
