DIDSBURY teenager Daniel Wardrop upstaged a field of seasoned professionals by winning the final Tamsel Tour event of the campaign at High Legh Park.

But it was a bitter-sweet experience for the England international as he had to forfeit the £2,000 top prize because he’s an amateur.

‘‘Of course I could have done with the cash, but I’ve no plans to join the paid ranks for at least a couple of years,’’ admitted Wardrop, whose sights are set on a Walker Cup place in 2003.’’

He interrupted his winter coaching in America two weeks ago to attend an England coaching session and also competed in the Lexus European Under-21 Championship at Turnberry, losing in a play-off for the top prize at the second extra hole against Walker Cup cap Barry Hulme.

Wardrop, 18, leaves for Spain on Saturday to take his place in the six-man England team, which also includes Bramall Park’s Scott Jackson, in a round-robin match against the host country, Sweden and Germany.

He described his victory over the professionals at High Legh as ‘‘awesome,’’ reeling off seven birdies in his rounds of 66 and 67, five-under-par all told, as he beat Clitheroe attached Stuart Andrew by a shot.

‘‘He had a chance to tie but missed a putt from a foot on the last hole,’’ added Wardrop, who will return to the United States at the end of the month.
