DISC jockey James Murphy turned the tables on Mike Hollingworth when he sent him spinning out of the first round of the Manchester Alliance matchplay championship.

The Shrigley Hall scratch man lost at the second stage last year to the Denton pro who was beaten in the final by Didsbury's Peter Barber.

But this time he was on home territory and blew him apart four and three in near gale-force conditions.

''He beat me two and one at Denton a year ago but it was a big advantage playing on my own course,'' admitted Murphy, a past Manchester Evening News double champion and a regular in the Cheshire county first team.

Victory crowned his best season in which has won the Crosby Challenge Plate, the Prestbury Open, finished fifth in the Mitsushiba rankings and joint first in the American Golf Cheshire order of merit with Crewe's James Holmes.

Record breaker

Murphy also smashed the course record at Shrigley on his way to winning the club championship and he has often proved unbeatable on the Macclesfield course.

''Hollingworth hits the ball miles but it that wind it was not always a great help,'' said Murphy who, after reaching the turn one up, won three holes out of four from the 11th to settled the issue.

''This win will help me to come out blazing next year,'' added Murphy who attributes his form to Adrian Hill who coaches at Portal.

Defeat ended a disappointing week for reigning Manchester golfer of the year Hollingworth who lost his top spot on the Tamsel Tour rankings at Vale of Llangollen and cannot regain it because he will be on holiday when the last fixture is held at High Legh Park next week.

Hollingworth, who captured the James Brearley Lancashire Open at Blackpool North Shore two months ago, said: ''I had an off day and Shrigley's not my favourite venue, especially in the wind but Murphy played steadily and deserved to win.''
