Latics sign Armstrong

OLDHAM have signed Bury’s highly-rated fullback Chris Armstrong for £150,000.

But they have missed out on another target with Armstrong’s former Bury teammate Jon Newby deciding to stay at Gigg Lane.

The deal for Armstrong was completed before 12 pm today (Monday) meaning the player can go straight into Oldham’s squad for the game against Reading on Tuesday.

Under a complicated agreement, Bury get £150,000 up front and then another £50,000 in a month’s time. The Shakers will also get a further £200,000 should Oldham be promoted to the Premiership at the end of the 2002/03 season, but only if Armstrong has played in at least 75 per cent of the games.

Completing the terms, Bury will get 20 per cent of any profit the Latics make on the player.

Confident of success

Armstrong has been a rare shining light for the Shakers this season and his solid displays at left back are thought to have attracted the attention of a number of Premier league sides. Although reluctant to let him go, the Shakers’ loss is offset by their signing of former England Under 21 international Jamie Stuart on a season-long deal.

Armstrong is confident of success at Boundary Park. He told the club’s official site: “The Club has good potential and they offered me a good deal so I am delighted to join.

“From what I've seen this season they are as good as any one in the league.”
