Lancs delay skipper decision

LANCASHIRE have delayed an announcement over the naming of their captain for next year.

Warren Hegg is expected to take over from John Crawley but after a committee meeting at Old Trafford last night ( Monday ) chief executive Jim Cumbes said: ''There is no statement and there may not be one for a few days.''

Crawley had three years in charge and walked out of an Old Trafford meeting two weeks ago believing he had been sacked, although Lancashire claimed that no final decision had been made at that time.

Hegg, vice-captain for the last two seasons is the natural successor, although his resurrected England career could cause problems.

''Chucky'' has been picked for the tour of India and if he does well, keeping his place for next summer, he will miss a massive chunk of the county programme.

England play seven Tests against Sri Lanka and India as well as taking part in the Nat West one-day series against both opponents.

Lancashire were hoping to speak to Crawley before making an announcement but he has been on holiday.

The captaincy is the biggest decision for Lancashire after a nightmare season in which they avoided championship relegation by the skin of their teeth and continued to decline in the one-day game.

It led to veteran Aussie coach Bob Simpson leaving after two years during which he formed a strong bond with Crawley.

Lancashire have drawn up a blueprint for the future with ex-captain Mike Watkinson installed as cricket manager for the next three years but a number of issues still have to be finalised including contracts for Neil Fairborther and Chris Schofield and the signing of a new overseas player.

Meanwhile, Hegg who had one of the best seasons of his career, is waiting for Old Trafford's official seal of approval.
