Endacott fancies Salford position

FRANK Endacott has revealed he is interested in becoming Salford City Reds rugby director.

Sources close to the former Wigan and New Zealand boss have confirmed Endacott would seriously consider an offer from the Reds.

He has been at home in New Zealand since leaving Wigan midway through this season and has told friends he would jump at the chance of another top post with a Super League club.

Steve McCormack will stay on as coach and work with a football supremo who could be appointed within the next fortnight.

Top Kiwi prop Quentin Pongia is also on his way to England - he has played for Endacott before and Salford could target the burly front-rower.

Pongia, however, could emerge as a top target for St Helens with David Fairleigh retiring at the end of the season.

But he may prefer to team up with Endacott again should he take charge at Salford.

Eric Hughes, Graham Murray and Andy Goodway are also in the Reds frame but Endacott does have admirers on the Reds board.

Reds, meanwhile, have confirmed - as revealed in yesterday's M.E.N. Sport - that they are close to signing Australian forward Darren Shaw.

Chief executive Dave Tarry has held contract talks with Shaw and the deal should be finalised later today.

Halifax star Paul Davidson has also been discussed.

Reds have also considered targeting Wigan's Gary Connolly but are led to believe he will land a new contract with the Warriors and could also play some guest rugby union for Orrell.

Andy Coley will be out for six months - the Reds forward must undergo a knee reconstruction.

Coach Steve McCormack told M.E.N. Sport: ''Andy is devastated to be out for so long.

''He has had a good season, done very well, but he needs surgery.''

  • NO official start date has yet been given for the new NFP season.

Leigh commercial manager Kevin Ashcroft said: ''I wish something could be sorted out soon.

''We have sponsors and we can't tell them just when the season will start - the whole thing needs clarifying as soon as possible.''

  • SWINTON have signed former St Helens junior Jason Johnson.
