Non-league football: Weekend preview

ALTRINCHAM boss Graham Heathcote is calling on his players to prove to him his Moss Lane honeymoon isn't over.

The Robins' bright start under Heathcote has faded and they have slipped back into the UniBond premier division's bottom six after collecting just two points from their last four games.

Heathcote insists he remains satisfied with his side's overall form and he's backing them to return to winning ways.

And he's looking to tomorrow's (Saturday) home clash with fellow strugglers Frickley to provide Alty with the chance to again ease their way clear of the drop-zone and demonstrate the novelty of his appointment has still to wear off.

Heathcote, whose team won three of their first four games after he'd replaced Bernard Taylor, said: "We should be capable of turning over the likes of Frickley. If we don't and fall back into the mire, that will tell me my honeymoon's over.

"But I've every confidence the lads can do it for me. Except for a couple of lacklustre halves, they've put in some good performances since I took over, but now we need to start pushing away from the bottom once again."

Heathcote's biggest headache is an injury-list which shows little sign of diminishing. But at least back to face Frickley will be his skipper and leading scorer, Manchester United and England physio Rod Thornley, who missed Altrincham's UniBond League Cup defeat by Hyde on Monday as he was away meeting the Queen along with Sven-Goran Eriksson and the national squad!

Elsewhere tomorrow, fourth-placed Ashton will welcome jet-heeled winger Chris Cornelly back from suspension at Lancaster. Stalybridge, who lie just a point below their Hurst Cross neighbours in eighth, have a host of injury doubts for their trip to Blyth.

Droylsden's loan capture from Chester, Dave Cameron, is in line for his home debut against third-placed Emley.

Conference basement side Leigh also have an attractive home date with high-flying Morecambe.

UniBond first division promotion chasers Radcliffe will be seeking a fifth successive league win when they visit lowly Eastwood.

Meanwhile, relegation-haunted Hyde have put their home clash with UniBond premier leaders Accrington back to Sunday (2pm) in the hope of attracting a bigger gate.

ALTRINCHAM are urging their fans to attend a meeting in the Moss Lane sponsors' lounge immediately after tomorrow's game to further discuss the idea of forming a supporters' trust.
