Basketball: Hogarth given last chance

MANCHESTER Magic could yet get an `extra' player to boost their bid for more trophies.

Coach Jeff Jones has ruled out signing anyone as his team looks to add the EBL title, play-offs and National Trophy to their National Cup success.

He is, however, ready to give Matt Hogarth one last chance to prove his fitness and join the Magic push.

Jones had written off the 6ft 5in forward, who has been missing with a persistent knee problem, for the remainder of the season.

But now he could figure - if the knee can hold out until the end of the campaign.

"He has had keyhole surgery and is rehabilitating from that," said Jones. "He now has to get some stuff done, but that could come later.

"It just depends what kind of reaction he gets and if he can stand up to training."

The return of the big, aggressive Hogarth would be a boost to Magic, who are among the smaller teams in the EBL1.

With fellow forward Steve Boonham only just getting back into the swing of things after his own injury lay-off, and veteran Danny Craven only available sparingly because of work commitments, Magic have struggled on the inside against some of their more physical rivals.

Hogarth's presence would help out and Jones added: "We are going to give him another try and if he can contribute, then great."

The weekend's mixed fortunes - home defeat to Worthing and a 30-point win over struggling Kings Lynn - leave Magic in third place, just two points behind leaders Reading with a game in hand.

Saturday's home game is a chance to get more points on the board - the visitors are Solent, who are bottom of the table with only one win all season.
