David has the makings of GB star

YOUNG Welsh dragon David Mills is following in the footsteps of his famous father.

Big Jim Mills, a cult figure for Widnes in the 1970s, is now seeing David make his mark on the professional game.

David also plays for Widnes and is a tremendous prospect according to his mate Bobbie Goulding, the former GB scrum half.

Young Mills will be in the spotlight at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium tomorrow against New Zealand.

Wales are coached by Neil Kelly - his club boss who has guided young Mills to the top.

Great prospect

Bobbie Goulding told M.E.N. Sport: "David is a great prospect - he is very powerful and he has done very well.

"I've known him for a good number of years. I once remember being at a children's Christmas party, I was eight - he was three, and possibly bigger than me!

"He has a great deal going for him and has all the attributes to be a Great Britain player.

"I'm sure he will be there or thereabouts at this level before too long - off the field he's also a cracking lad - one of the best you could ever wish to meet.

"I'm delighted to see him doing so well because he works hard and his dad Jim has obviously helped him and encouraged him.

"David did well last season and will no doubt benefit being part of the Welsh set-up."

Goulding's own career is currently at the crossroads - he finished last season at Leigh but it's still unclear if he will return to Hilton Park.

An option open to him is going into coaching - an aspect of the game he says he would enjoy.

He is currently fronting a new protein and carbohydrate drink and is interested in sports nutrition.

Goulding is working with a Crewe-based firm and they have already signed up Man of Steel Paul Sculthorpe to endorse their products.

Goulding is still hopeful of playing at the highest level next term but admits he was bitterly disappointed at Leigh's performance in the Grand Final defeat by Huddersfield.
