DAVID Horsey has put his plans to turn professional on hold after landing a coveted place in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad to face the United States in Ireland next September.

"This is the highest achievement in the amateur game and my ultimate goal," said the 21-year-old Styal member, one of seven English players in a 22-strong line-up which includes his Cheshire team-mate Paul Waring and Lancastrian Ben Parker.

The list will be whittled down the 10 players with the best records in ranking tournaments in the run-up to the match at Royal County Down so Horsey still has work to do.

"I'll enter everything to ensure my name appears on that team-sheet," he vowed.

Horsey, voted one of Britain's most exciting young sports prospects three months ago after being nominated by the Manchester Evening News, was always confident of making the squad.

Dipped

And his selection has more than made up for the disappointment of being overlooked for the second year in a row by England for the Home Internationals.

His form dipped in the weeks before the team was announced but he came roaring back with victory in the North of England Youths' Championship at Middlesbrough, broke the course record on his way to winning the Prestbury Open, then topped both those achievements when he claimed the Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham.

Since then he's been working out in the gym, practising his short game and playing in the Manchester Alliance.

His next big event is the Lake Macquarie Championship in Australia next month followed by the New South Wales strokeplay and Tasmanian Open.

Waring, the 2005 England champion from Bromborough was always a cert for the Walker Cup squad while Royal Birkdale's Parker is considered one of the country is most exciting players.

Oddly, he has never turned out for the Lancashire side, mainly because he commutes from his home in Germany where his dad is a pro.

BOLTON'S Steve Parry cleared the first qualifying hurdle for the Asian Tour in Thailand and competes in the final later this week.
