Speedway: Belle Vue 56 Arena Essex 38

DANISH star Kenneth Bjerre had his best home meeting of the season as Belle Vue breezed into the semi- finals of the Knockpout Cup last night.

He dropped only one point to a visiting rider aas the Aces, holders of the trophy, joined Coventry, Eastbourne and Poole in the last four.

He had to race with only one bike available as he had flown in on an afternoon flight from Denmark to Manchester where he had been unable to locate a spar engine he had brought with him.

Bjerre, who took the man of the match award, finished with 12 points as the Aces made a late surge to go through 102-82 on aggregate.

He said: "There was a 40-minute delay on the flight and I couldn't find the engine when I landed.

"It was my best home meeting of the season.

"I have been struggling to make good starts, but my mechanics have been working hard to get things right and, hopefully, they will be better from now on."

BELLE VUE: J Crump 14, K Bjerre 12, S Stead 9, J Screen 8, J Wright 5, P Morris 4, TP Madsen 4.

Now is the time to up our game. We have got to get a couple of away wins somewhere and continue picking up the majority of bonus points. Arena Essex away is vital we win. If we lose we will almost certainly sacrifice the bonus but if we win it's three points. Of our remaining away matches two are at Arena, two at Wolves and one at Oxford and they are all good opportunities What would be really handy is a win at Poole tonight. Fortunately the team seems to be improving with Bjerre looking more like himself and the bottom end of the team all looking more likely to score those vital minor placings. Pity that Wright can't stay all season at reserve.
