The 22-year-old from Bury has already banked more than é3,000 competing on the minor tours.
And today he's contemplating the prospect of playing in the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool later this month.
Doherty eased through the regional qualifying round after a play-off at Yorkshire club Pannal to join the 300 or so other hopefuls in the final shootout on Monday and Tuesday.
Last night, he was waiting to see which course he would be allocated: his preference is West Lancs. But if he is assigned Conwy, Wallasey or Formby, he will give it his best shot, although it will be the toughest challenge of his fledgling career.
"If I get through, great, but I'll enjoy myself whatever happens," he said.
Ellesmere assistant Martyn Hamer also progressed at Pannal, along with 17-year-old Ashton-under-Lyne amateur Matthew Nixon, who was in the play-off.
A CHANGE of attitude worked instant wonders for Welsh World Cup winner Bradley Dredge on his 33rd birthday as he took a share of the first-round lead in the European Open at the K Club near Dublin.
Dredge was only two under after 11 holes, but then birdied the next four and two-putted the par five last to join Swede Niclas Fasth out in front.
After falling from third to 17th with a closing 75 at the French Open on Sunday, Dredge had a heart-to-heart with his American coach Claude Harmon.
"He was fed up with the way I was finishing things off, and so after analysing it, we decided I should try to be more aggressive," said the Tredegar-born golfer.
