Speedway: Jason joins elite

BELLE Vue boss Ian Thomas today bracketed captain Jason Crump with Kiwi speedway legends Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs.

Thomas, who has managed some of the world's greatest riders, including six-times champion Mauger and Briggs in his 35 years as a promoter, will be a spectator at tonight's Danish Grand Prix in Copenhagen when Crump bids for his fourth GP victory in a row.

The 30-year-old Aussie has been in a class of his own this year as he chases his second World title.

He goes into the fifth of the 10-meeting GP series holding a massive 34-point lead from American Greg Hancock with Dane Nicki Pedersen a further two points adrift.

Amazing

Thomas said: "Jason's form and consistency have been amazing this season and I feel so lucky to be able to watch him week in week out.

"I can't remember seeing a rider, including Ivan and Barry, who dominated as much as Jason has done this season.

"But he's not just an outstanding individual, he's also a superb team man, always available to give other riders a hand."

Crump's biggest threat could come from wild card Hans Andersen, the Danish star who was controversially ignored when riders were invited to join the top eight qualifiers for this year's championship.

He will be on a mission to prove a point in front of his home crowd.

It was nice to see such a TEAM MAN grabbing hold of his TEAM MATE Kenneth Bjerre's helmet & sticking his fingers in his face in the Peterborough Pits on thursday night. A quiet word out of the view of watching fans would have been more appropriate. Not a good example to set. Great rider, but from what I've seen, not a nice man. About time someone gave him a personality like the American World Champions of past years.
