LITTLE big-shot Haydn McCullen could have written his name into the Didsbury record books at the age of nine.

The Wellfield School, Sale, pupil fired a nett 56 playing off a 27 handicap in his first junior competition - and no-one at the 114-year-old club can recall such a feat.

Haydn hits his drives between 180-200 yards and during his dream round, which won him the Peter Knight Trophy, he registered pars at some of the toughest holes as well as grabbing a birdie two on the 157-yard fourth.

And as his handicap dropped to 21, dad Wilf said: éHis aim is to get down to 18 this summer which could cost me some money on new equipment.é

Haydn is coached by his club pro Peter Barber and Gareth Benson, at Astley Driving Range but has also received tips from Macclesfieldés Jamie Donaldson and fellow European Tour player Nick Dougherty, from Shaw Hill.

And he promised: éI will continue to work hard at my game.é

GARETH Hastie, the leading qualifier from Dunscar, swept into tonightés Bolton Championship semi-finals at Great Lever and Farnworth when he dispatched Westhoughtonés Ian Gregory three and two.

But the biggest surprise was provided by the host clubés Paul Grundy who beat 2001 winner Andy Runciman five and four to set up a showdown with Hastie.

Runcimanés Lostock Park clubmate Rob Taylor also crashed out, four and three against former junior champion James Barr, from Deane.

Barr will meet Hindley Hallés Peter Finch who eased through three and two against Breightmetés Rob Brown.

CRAIG Fort cashed in on local knowledge when he won the Trafalgar Trophy over his home course Nelson to move into a share of seventh place in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of merit after nine events. 20

Rounds of 66 and 68 for a six-under-par total left him five shots clear of Ashton and Leaés Chris Hayes.
