A tale of two towns

ITéS a tale of two townséSale playing in front of virtually full houses every week at Stockport have reached the RU Premiership Final at Twickenham while Stockport County with whom they share Edgeley Park only just avoided the humiliation of dropping out of the league.

But as M.E.N. Sportés STUART BRENNAN discovers it is the opposite situation across Greater Manchester in Wigan where the soccer team proved the surprise package in the Premiership while the Warriors RL team are languishing at the bottom of Superleague.

Hmmm. Stockport piece seems quite fair and balanced and the County fan is spot on. But the Wigan piece? Must do better, as I was frequently told at school. Wigan RLFC hold the crowd record for the JJB at over 25,000.
Wigan RLFC crowds have been steadily increasing over the past few years.
Season ticket sales up again this year.
Wigan for relegation?
Look what happened last time - on promotion to the top flight, the club dominated for years, even winning the BBC TV Sports Team of the Year award...and that with the BBC being an even stronger bastion of union than the M.E.N!

Stockport were one of the first teams to join the Northern Union [later the Rugby League]. Sale have nothing whatsoever to do with Stockport, which nowadays is a soccer town, even though that may mean City or United.

Well done Sale in getting to their Premiership, but I'm afraid the facts are getting in the way of a good story.
Sale can sell out crowds because their capacity is only 10,500. Wigan's current average crowd is about 13,000 with some big crowds against St Helens and Leeds expected in the next couple of weeks. Not bad for the cellar dwellars.Remember form is temporary, class is permanent.

When franchising arrives in SuperLeague Wigan will be in it and will stay in it. Can you realy say that about the Latics?
