Paralympics: Weir's treble

IT takes something special to upstage `Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius but `wheelie wonder' David Weir provided it on the final day of competition.

South African sprinter Pistorius, the `fastest man on no legs', scored a 100m and 200m double at the Regional Athletics Arena.

But his double was trumped by Weir's treble in the T54 wheelchair 100m, 200m and 1500m.

And it came just two weeks after his victory in the London Marathon.

His achievement swelled Britain's track and field total to nine golds, one silver and two bronze medals.

And it helped towards a final medal tally of 21 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals from athletics, cycling, swimming and wheelchair basketball.

Weir, 26, who took silver in the 100m at the Athens Paralympics, finished in 14.79 seconds.

He said: "After winning the 100m I was feeling really confident but I didn't expect to win all three. In the 1500m I was racing against guys who have been doing that distance for years so it was great to win against the best in the world.

Form

"I've never been in better form. I was on good form in Athens but this year has just been brilliant."

Other track and field golds came from Tracy Hinton (T11 400m), Danny Crates (T46 800m), who won gold at the Athens 2004 Paralympics, Kenny Churchill (F37 javelin) setting a world record of 49.78, Danny Greaves (F44 discus), David Gale (F32/51, discus) and Beverley Jones (F37 shot).

It wasn't such a great afternoon for 16-times Paralympic medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson, who finished fourth in the T53 100m and sixth in the T53 800m. "I just felt flat out there," she said.

Marple swimmer Matt Walker had a super Saturday, winning two gold medals at the Aquatics Centre and seeing his beloved Stockport County stay in the Football League.

"I didn't want to know how County were doing until after I had competed in the individual race," he said.

"But it completed what has been a memorable day."

Walker won the S7 50m freestyle and helped Britain to gold in the 4x50m freestyle relay.

Mancunian Sascha Kindred (S7 50m butterfly) also won gold while South African star Natalie du Toit set two world records on her way to winning gold in the S9 50m and the multi-disability 100m freestyle.

Du Toit clocked a time of 29.04 secs in the 50m, beating the record she set at the Common- wealth Games in Melbourne, with Britain's Claire Cashmore third in a new British record for the 100m of 1:01.18.
