RFU announce shake-up

ANDY Robinson is to remain as England head coach with "revised responsibilities" as part of a Rugby Football Union shake-up of the coaching structure.

RFU chief executive Francis Baron also revealed that Robinson will report to a new Elite Rugby Director, yet to be appointed, who will replace performance director Chris Spice.

Spice has resigned with immediate effect and Baron also announced at this morning's Twickenham press conference that backs coach Joe Lydon, defensive coach Phil Larder and goalkicking coach Dave Alred are to be replaced.

Baron said: "There is no doubt that the performances of the England team since the 2003 World Cup have been unacceptable and that changes have to be made if we are to turn things round."

Appointment

The shake-up will also include the appointment of a forwards coach.

Brian Ashton, Mike Ford and Jon Callard have been tipped to replace Lydon, Larder and Alred respectively.

Baron added: éWe believe that these changes will give England, with Andy at the helm, the best chance of defending the Rugby World Cup in 18 monthsé time.

éAndyés revised job description will allow his strength as a coach to come to the fore so he can focus on preparing the team while freeing him from the time-consuming tasks of management and securing player release.

éCoupled with a new Elite Rugby Director and the complete integration of the England management into the department, we believe that this will result in a more effective use of staff and resources.é
