Tony turns heat on the ice men

THE new coach of Manchester Phoenix has set his sights on re-kindling the passion for ice hockey in the city.

Tony Hand takes over Phoenix in the Elite League next season and says: "I'm naturally excited about joining the Phoenix and the opportunity to re-kindle the feeling for the game in Manchester.

"Over the years the game has a big history in the city and to be given the chance to build a new team from a totally clean sheet is just the chance I was looking for. The ownership have spoken very sensibly about the club's aims and ambitions and together I think this is a great chance to build something very positive and to win silverware."

The 39-year-old Scot was the first British-born and trained player to be drafted into the National Hockey League when he was selected in 1986 by Edmonton Oilers.

Last season Hand went back to hometown club Edinburgh Capitals as they returned to the top-flight.

At least we have a chance of winning something next season, will we raise a banner in the new rink for the wooden spoon? I don't like some of the things being said about Tony with his man management, apparently not many players like to go back and play for him after 1 season, and the fans of the teams he has coached at don't like him. I also don't like the sound of seeing him berating and having a go at players in front of the whole crowd for the littlest mistakes. Anyway I will give him the first 5 games and if I don't like what I see I will stop going, simple as.
