Super League sides take up the Challenge

SUPER League teams enter the Challenge Cup this weekend and Salford City Reds, who are strongly tipped by the bookies for a good Cup run, have major injury problems ahead of Sunday's clash with Dewsbury.

Gareth Haggerty, the Reds' outstanding forward, is undergoing a scan and an X-ray on an ankle injury sustained in the win over Les Catalans.

Football director Steve Simms says: "Hopefully it's just ligament damage, Gareth has been outstanding both in training and in matches, I've never seen him as fit - we picked up quite a few knocks in France."

David Hodgson has a leg injury and Ian Sibbit is carrying a shoulder injury. Sean Rutgerson, Stephen Myler and Kevin McGuinness could come into the side for Sunday.

Steve Simms adds: "A good Cup run would be good both in terms of prestige and financially. We don't fear anyone, we are going OK and you need a little luck but who knows this could be our year. We've worked hard in the closed season and the results are starting to show."

Half-back Danny Orr has damaged ligaments and misses Wigan's crucial clash with Wakefield. Tim Jonkers and Oliver Wilkes are ineligible.

Wigan don't have the best of records in the Cup at Belle Vue and defeat would further increase the pressure on under-fire boss, Ian Millward.

Cup favourites Saints host Doncaster on Friday and Jamie Lyon has hinted he's keen to sign a new deal at Knowsley Road but Aussie club Manly remain firm favourites to sign him. Paul Sculthorpe will again be rested.

Leigh's Neil Turley is set to announce his retirement due to a persistent back injury.

Hooker Paul Rowley is back from suspension for Sunday's clash with Leeds.

Rochdale's Lee Sanderson will face Celtic Crusaders on Sunday and then undergo knee surgery. Reduced admission prices will be in operation.

Swinton coach Paul Kidd has a selection headache ahead of Sunday's clash with York City Knights.

He was without six players for the impressive NRC win over Leigh and they are now back but Craig Farrimond will be out for three months with a shoulder injury.
