RL final set for Twickers switch

RUGBY League's showpiece Challenge Cup final in August will almost certainly be switched from Wembley to Twickenham.

M.E.N. Sport can reveal the RFL have drawn up the emergency plan should the jinxed é757m Wembley still not be finished.

Steelworkers, scaffolders and welders were given notice yesterday that their employment will be terminated next Tuesday because sub-contractors at the Wembley site have not been paid.

It is the latest problem to affect the multi-million-pound project, which is already seriously delayed.

Twickenham has been viewed as the best alternative by the RFL with many fans having already booked London hotels for the weekend in the belief that Wembley would be ready.

A switch to Cardiff is not possible due to a Rolling Stones concert and playing the final at Murrayfield in Edinburgh would have wrecked the plans of fans committed to London.

An RL spokesman said: "No one has yet said the final will not go ahead at Wembley but if it is to be switched then we have a number of alternative options under review."

What do you think of the plan to held the RL final at the home of rugby union? Have your say.

Perhaps the RFL have more chance of staging the Challenge Cup final at Arsenal's new 60,000 seater stadium - it's sure to be ready before Wembley! What a shambles.

Anywhere but Twickenham. A ground without soul, a ground where they will take our money without welcoming us. It's the home of losers but they'll win on this one if we have to go there. The best atmosphere by far has been at the National Stadium in Cardiff.

Cardiff is the best venue by a mile, great city, nice people much better than our soul-less overpriced capital. But unfortunatley some poodle haired stadium rockers have booked the Millenium stadium so im afraid its the HQ of darkness.

See you in the Twickers car park for Lobster, Caviar and the finest Ferreo Rocher money can buy chaps!
