Having set Sri Lanka an improbable victory target of 509, India reduced the tourists to 235-6 by the close, leaving themselves needing four wickets today.
India spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were the danger men, tormenting Sri Lanka with bat and ball.
They shared an unbroken half-century stand for the last wicket to help India declare on 316-9 and then between them snared the opening four Sri Lankan wickets.
Harbhajan was the first to make the breakthrough when he had Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu caught by Mohammad Kaif for 16 just before lunch, leaving the tourists on 39-1.
Kumble then took centre stage with three quick breakthroughs.
